Muskrat features Fair Trade Organic coffee from Guatemala

The Guatemalan highlands, with their natural shade and jungle climate, are the perfect environment for growing exceptional arabica beans. Our Guatemalan beans from Huehuetenango (pronounced Way-way-te-nan-go) are full-bodied, bright and floral-toned. We also source Guatemalan coffee from the 5,000 foot slopes of the high volcanoes that surround Lake Atitlan, an area often called 'the heart of the Mayan empire.' It is produced by indigenous Tzutzujil peoples from Santiago Atitlan and San Juan La Laguna. Guatemalan coffees are known for their highly acidic and fruity flavor.

Guatemala is the home of strong agricultural traditions, and farmers are conscious of the importance of shade as an ecological niche for migratory songbirds, for the health of the soil, and for the additional sustenance the hardwoods and fruit trees provide their families. Guatemala’s indigenous people have maintained their culture and traditional dress in spite of centuries of political and social pressure to assimilate, and they have paid a high price for their beliefs, including years of war.

We are proud to pay premium prices for high-quality Organic coffee, supporting economic development for indigenous people of the Guatemalan highlands.
